Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

Choosing a new doctor is an important decision. Tristan McMullan’s team has compiled some of the most common questions asked by previous patients and included answers to help you make your decision. If there’s something they haven’t touched on, please just ask.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER MY VISIT?

If you have a GP or optician referral, most insurance providers will cover the initial consultation. Please check with them first. If you do not have a GP or optician referral, you can self-refer but you may need to self-fund.

MAY I DRIVE TO MY APPOINTMENT?

If your eye problem is one to do with visual issues, rather than one concerring eyelids, dry eye etc, then it is likely Mr McMullan will want to put dilating eye drops into your eyes - these dilate your pupils and take up to four hours to wear off, during which time you should not drive, operate machinery etc.

WHAT AREAS OF EXPERTISE DO YOU COVER?

Please read the 'About' page on the header bar.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL LETTER?

If you are self funding, you will not need a referral letter.

CAN I TRANSFER TO THE NHS AFTER BEING SEEN PRIVATELY?

You can transfer at any time to the NHS. However, you will need to be referred to an NHS doctor/hospital by your GP which Mr McMullan can request on your behalf should you wish. You cannot have NHS tests or NHS surgery for an issue you have been seen privately, without this re-referral for an NHS clinic appointment. If, however, you are already in the NHS system, and are having regular NHS clinic appointments, but would like an additional private consultation to review, for example, you will not need to be re-referred in to the NHS. Any private consultation letters would be sent to your NHS hospital should you wish so they have a comprehensive medical history.

CAN I GET A SAME DAY APPOINTMENT?

This is unlikely but not impossible, depending on last minute cancellations. Please call 07958 405874 to speak to Lucinda to find out.

DO YOU CHARGE A CANCELLATON FEE?

No, we do not currently charge a cancellation fee, although  we would request that you give as much notice as possible as there will be many other patients waiting for a clinic appointment.
